This is the third book I’ve read by Jenna-Bayley Burke and I think this is my favorite so far! It’s hard to tell though, because I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by her. What I think she excels at is mixing the lust, romance and love all together and making it work! This is the story of Sophie and David. Sophie is a cute girl who seems to think never of herself but only those around her. David is a strong man, quite successful but definitely scarred by some events in his past. He is a tall man who has a rule of dating only women who are at least 5′10″ and have blonde hair. He NEVER stays over, and NEVER goes for round two. Sophie is a tiny yoga instructor and also the sister of Daphne, David’s best friend, Craig’s wife. Daphne has long despised David for his womanizing ways. Sophie has had a crush on David for as long as Daphne and Craig have been together. She is a 26 year old virgin, just waiting for David to come along. They get together quite by accident–Daphne is pregnant and having a difficult pregnancy and must be on bed rest. Normally she and her husband, Craig, teach the yoga class that helps intrepret the Kuma Sutra to committed couples. Exit Daphne and Craig for the class, enter Sophie and David. Right from the get go David is attracted to Sophie even though she doesn’t fit into his rules. From the very beginning of the story there is constant contact with Sophie and David. Even though Sophie is terrified of having her heart broken, and David is terrified of letting someone in who throws his carefully planned life in a whirlwind they do work together to be together. It’s a great story of friendship, of sibling love and of misguided parental love. If you’ve never read anything by Jenna this would be the perfect book for you to start with! And I’m sure, if you’re like me, you’ll want to read everything by her. As this is a Samhain published book there is a bit more spice to it than most contemporary love stories, but make no mistake this is a tastefully written story of deep love and emotional committment.

Okay, I completely liked this book and I was definitely happy to see that the “Later I would find..” statement was drastically reduced in this book. I almost hated reading so much of it in the first one. The story picks up where the last one left off. You still have Mac trying to prove she was up to the challenge of revenge and saving the world, Barrons is still being a jerk, and Vlane – well I don’t know what his angle is. He takes a turn I hadn’t quite expected and I don’t know where it’s going. The story is written well with many twists and turns. Although, I feel that what was driven to be the main plot in the first one (getting revenge and seeking out OOPs) didn’t hardly appear in this one. I was also quite frustrated to have Barrons and Mac finally show that they do actually have chemistry, only to have it start then stop and go absolutely nowhere. With them studiously ignoring it, I was annoyed. There is plenty of events that are traumatic but could have used a little more details and action scenes. Other than that, a good read.

A Q&A with Karen Marie Moning

What inspired you to launch a new series? And what is the single greatest new twist in the Fever series that fans can expect to enjoy?
Inspiration is a kind word. I didn’t have a choice. It’s the story idea that came and wouldn’t go away. I think the single great­est new twist in the Fever series is that Mac is a continuing heroine, on a critical mission, who gets caught in a danger­ous love-lust triangle with two of the most seductive men I’ve written to date.

If you were casting the Fever series for television, who would be the ideal actress to play Mac. Why?
That’s a tough one. I don’t watch much television and what I do see is after the DVD’s have been released, so I’m woefully out of date. If backed to a wall I’d say Mac is one part George from Dead Like Me, one part Sara Pezzini from Witchblade and one part sweet southern belle who’s being forced to discover there’s steel under all that magnolia, after all.

You write vividly sexy scenes. You write thrilling suspense plots. Do you find any one part of crafting these novels more challenging than another?
I find them equally challenging. The suspense plots have to be tightly constructed and seamlessly interwoven through the five books of the Fever series, which makes for a lot to keep up with, what to reveal, what not to reveal, how and when. The sexy scenes are very intimate and I don’t shy away from detail, which demands both total immersion and separation of self to write. There are some “sexy” scenes in this series that are far more disturbing than seductive and those are among the most difficult to write. I hope if I’m squirming, wanting to rescue Mac, so is my reader.

Were you surprised at any point in the writing of Blood­fever—meaning did anything come up in the creative pro­cess that was not what you anticipated when you began Darkfever, the first novel in the series?
In Faefever, the third book of the series, Mac says: “Sometimes my dreams feel so real it’s hard to believe they’re just the subconscious’s stroll across a whimsical map that has no true north. Sometimes it seems like Dreaming must be a land that really exists out there somewhere, at a concrete latitude and longitude, with its own rules, laws, treacherous terrains and dangerous inhabitants.” (She later finds out The Dreaming does, indeed, exist.) I feel the same about the Fever world. It’s so complete to me, so vividly and exactingly detailed that I think it must really exist out there somewhere. Since the story came to me in toto, there have been very few, minor surprises.

If you could stand in a room with your heroes—the men from any of your novels—not just the Fever novels—who would you most like to interview yourself? Why? What of the women?
Men: The Unseelie King. He’s rumored to be a million years old. I want to know if he’s sorry.
Women: Queen Aoibheal. I want to know if she’s really for­gotten, or if she’s just pretending.

Describe your writing routine when composing the Fever novels.
The location varies but the schedule is the same. I write best in the morning when my subconscious is still simmering with images and metaphors from dreaming. I wrote Darkfeverin Georgia, and Bloodfever in Key West; all that sunshine was a nice counterpoint to the darkness of the story. I start early in the morning, usually around 4:30 or 5:00 and write until 11, break for a two-hour lunch and go back to it around 1. I use the afternoons to edit and work on other aspects of my busi­ness. Before I go to bed I block out the scene(s) I plan to write the next day so my subconscious can mull them over while I sleep.

When you aren’t writing your novels, what are you doing for fun? And what kinds of books or which authors are your favorites?
Lately a lot of lying in the sun—I’m still in Key West and I’m afraid Mac has rubbed off on me, or maybe it’s all the Jimmy Buffet they keep playing down here. Usually, however, I’m not so sedentary. I love to work out, hike, bike, rollerblade, shop with my sisters, and travel with my husband and our cat, Moonshadow. I don’t get nearly enough time to read. The most recent books I finished were the latest by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Charlaine Harris, and an early Dan Simmons.

And can you share a little sneak peek at what’s coming after Bloodfever?

McKettrick’s Choice Review

Out of all four of the McKettrick cowboy brothers, Holt’s story definitely far surpasses the previous books in this series. While the other books were entertaining, Rafe’s, Kade’s and Jeb’s stories were all interwoven, all too similar and very predictable. As a side character, Holt seemed almost forgotten in the other books until comic relief or tension was needed in a scene. Ms. Miller did a fabulous job giving Holt a strong story, while still maintaining a similar storyline to that of the other McKettricks (without using obvious scenes and repeating dialogue just to keep the story flowing, even though she did use the bridal-crutch a bit too much). Holt and Lorelei were the perfect hero and heroine – these characters show their stuff on the open trail and face many brutal obstacles. Additional characters like Holt’s foster family and his friends from his days as a Texas Ranger, along with scenes of the harsh Wild West, made Holt’s story that much more real and compelling. Although I wish Ms. Miller had given her readers a little more explanation about Holt’s thoughts and actions, especially those concerning his sisters-in-law back in Arizona. But overall, this story was a great read and should definitely be on the list of any fan of Western Romance.

This is the seventh novel in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Although some of the plotting defied credibility in this volume, this series is seductive in its appeal. We see some of the main characters involved here: Eric and Bill and Pam and the Queen of Louisiana (Sophie-Anne) and Quinn and. . . . The repertory theater sees many of the familiar characters here.

However, this is also one of the more sanguinary on the series, so–at the close of this work–many figures die. The Fellowship is involved here. Vampire politics is most heated. Without giving anything away, it is clear that the Queen of Louisiana engaged in very deep and subtle political maneuvering. After several books without his involvement, Barry the Bellboy (now named Barry Bellboy) is back in the picture, another human telepath. He and Sookie partner to try to ensure a successful vampire summit.

And that conference is at the center of this work, held in the Chicago area. The Queen of Louisiana faces charges over her involvement in the death of her husband (the King of Arkansas). The Fellowship is attempting a spectacular assault on the vampire horde at the conference. There is the normal internecine vampire politics, which often leads to other vampires being killed.

Sookie and her boyfriend Quinn (a weretiger) try to develop a halfway normal relationship (what are the odds of that?). But Sookie’s past relationships with the vampires Eric and Bill complicate matters. The seventh entry in the series shows the increasing complexity of the network of relationships and builds well on top of the other previous works.

Treachery is a key aspect of this novel. The vampire hotel becomes the center for a bloodbath, with numerous actors jockeying for position and for achieving their very distinct goals. One of the more interesting works in this series, because of the complexity of actors involved and the uncertain politics at issue.

Singh does an excellent job of combining a romance with an excellent mystery plot. Max has made several appearances in previous books in this series. A detective, he’s usually called in as the trustworthy cop who is friends with Tally and Clay (shapeshifters). Now he has been specifically requested by Councilor Nikita Duncanbto solve the mysterious murders of her trusted staff. As his partner, Nikita requested a J Psy to accompany him.

Sophia Russo is one of the few J (Justice) Psy that can pull a memory from a person and send it to others. Her kind is so in demand that they are normally exclusively used only in the most extreme murder cases. The worst, depraved individuals out there. Because of the strain of her job, most J Psy don’t make it to age 30. Sophia is 28 and has been told this is her last job.

I thought Singh did a wonderful job developing the story and the relationship between the characters. Even though this story could stand alone, I don’t think a new reader to this series would understand the world building without at least reading the first book.

Bonds of Justice Overview

Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in New York Enforcement. Born with a natural shield that protects him against Psy mental invasions, he knows he has little chance of advancement within the Psy- dominated power structure. The last case he expects to be assigned to is that of a murderer targeting a Psy Councilor’s closest advisors. And the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual of ways is a Psy on the verge of catastrophic mental fracture.
